2023 Vintage Story: 2023 was a year of a very dry summer. Endless sunny days. Maybe one of the easier years to take care of vineyards in recent times as it wasn’t as humid as 2019 and 2022, not as hot as 2021 and 2018 and, thank goodness, there were no wildfires like 2020. This translated into perfectly manicured vineyards with excellent yields of gorgeously and perfectly ripe fruit. Winemaking conditions were nearly ideal and the winery itself oft times smelled more like a bakery making fruit muffins than it did a place fermenting grapes into wine! This was simply a vintage that seemed to exist in the romantic nature of vintages rather than in the “reality of farming” nature of actual vintages. The wines were a pleasure to work with from beginning to end and the results are wines that reflect to a tee where they came from. This is, seemingly, a rare vintage so, act accordingly.
This bottling allows us to accomplish two things that are very important to us as a winery. The first thing is that it allows us to be incredibly detailed about the barrels we select for our vineyard designated wines, so they true expressions of the site on a year in and year out basis. The Willamette Valley Pinot Noir bottling “Reserve” is almost entirely made up of barrels that simply were not included in a more prestigious bottling, which allows us to choose from larger sections of our diverse vineyards. Secondly, it allows us to create a blended wine that has a degree of consistency to it each vintage that is of incredibly high-quality and will retail for under $30.
The 2023 Willamette Valley Reserve Pinot Noir is, as always, a great indicator of what to expect from Patricia Green Cellars’ wines from the vintage. This is a very intense wine all the way around. The color is dark ruby and has a particular gleam to it that makes is seem like it shines. This is a darker, deeper and denser version than the very lovely and red-fruited 2022. Pomegranate, Chinese Five Spice, cassis and a sweet earthen quality form the complex aromatics. The palate responds equally with dense, sweet blackberries, licorice, red plums and red spices that are well-integrated and float on a finish of well-defined tannins. In short, this wine is absurdly delicious to be an entry level Pinot Noir.
